Why create an ear?
The purpose of creating an artificial ear is to replace a patient's ear that has been wholly or partly removed due to a disease, injury, accident, etc. As the medical field advances and the use of 3D printing to create human organs increases, the demand for artificial ears will also increase. Many people injure or lose one or both their ears through disease or in an accident. This leaves them stuck with one or no ears, which in our society today, makes them look "different" or "weird." The creation of an artificial ear will help people like this to gain back their normal appearance.
Artificial ears are not only created for appearance, but also for function. Unfortunately, in our lab with our limited time and resources, we will not be able to create an artificial ear that actually functions like a real ear. However, artificial ears are being created around the world that look and function like real human ears. This greatly aids patients who have lost or injured their ear, because not only will their new ear implant look like a real ear, but it will also function like a real ear. It will be like the patient never suffered the injury to or loss of their ear.
Project Overview
Our goal is to create a 3D printed artificial ear that can replace a natural ear that has been lost through accident or injury. We are going to create this design using Maya software and print it using a 3D printer. The main function of this artificial ear will be to act as a replacement and to take on the appearance of a real human ear. By the completion of this project, an artificial ear will be produced that will closely resemble a human ear and can be attached to the side of the patient's head.
