Project Overview

Our goal is to create a 3D printed artificial ear that can replace a natural ear that has been lost through accident or injury. We are going to create this design using Maya software and print it using a 3D printer. The main function of this artificial ear will be to act as a replacement and to take on the appearance of a real human ear. By the completion of this project, an artificial ear will be produced that will closely resemble a human ear and can be attached to the side of the patient's head.

Tutorials

We had never used Maya before, and had little experience with modelling in general. The solution to this was to view lots of basic tutorials for Maya as well as studying references and art tutorials, to improve the observation skills needed to make the model look realistic.

The above image was obtained from http://rickymujica.blogspot.com/, where the author posted about practicing drawing and modelling to improve his art and observation skills. The advantage of using this picture was that it shows the same ear from multiple angles, which helped us when we began rotating our own model.

Autodesk, the company that owns Maya, has an extensive Maya 2014 tutorial and we used the section "Modeling a polygonal mesh from a reference image" to learn how to create and modify a polygonal mesh.

Here is a Youtube tutorial in which the speaker actually creates an ear model using Maya, for animation purposes (Maya is primarily used for animation and character design).
